NEW Pillows!

So last night I mastered the art of making pillow covers with a hidden zipper. It was surprisingly easy when I used these instructions from House on Hill Road. Now I just need to start cranking them out in time for the winter holidays.

I screen printed my Birds on the Wire image on the front of the pillow - I think I'm going to try putting Paws on them too. This one was done in all red, but next time I'm going to use a patterned fabric for the backside and see what that looks like.

Rock Band Crafting Debate

Friday night I went over Dave & Preeya's house to rehearse with HEXA! I played my bass clarinet on a few of their songs when they recorded their album and now we're figuring out parts for a few more songs and I'll be playing with them live at future shows!

This is awesome because 1.) I get to cross "play in a rock band" off my Things to Do list, 2.) it is not just any old rock band - Hexa is one of my favorite bands ever, and 3.) it's really exciting to collaborate with friends on a project.

After we practicing for a couple hours we wrapped up so we could watch the Obama/McCain debate. I had been looking forward to this for a while - finally we're getting down to the real stuff. The debate was more Q&A than debate, but it was still interesting to see them on stage together. I just wish the election was over and Obama was in the White House - only a month to go...

After the debate Preeya made some popcorn and we cut up hologram stickers to make a mobile. It was a solid, late-night, impromtu crafting session.

Abe and Junior reunited.

On Saturday Abe and I went to MOMA. They have a new architecture exhibit that was really great. They also have pre-fab houses constructed in the side lot that you can tour, but it was raining out and they would only let us walk around the perimeter.

Aye Chihuahua!

I saw this trailer on tv a few weeks ago and Abe turned to me and said "You want to see that, don't you." and I said "Yes, I do."

I was reading the blog amandalynferri today and saw that she had another trailer for the movie embedded on her site. She wants to be set up on a blind date and take the person to see this movie with her. I think that sounds like a great idea.

Just watch the trailer and then try to tell me you don't want to see it. I won't believe you.

Ceramics: Faux Bois Coasters

These new ceramic faux bois coasters are hot out of the kiln!

Each one has a diameter of about 3.5". They were painted with engobe, carved, fired in the kiln, and then glazed with a clear, matte glaze. The bottoms are covered in felt so that your table or desk top will be extra protected.

Each set is made up of 4 coasters in varying brown hues. All coasters are handmade and therefore is completely unique.

Will be available on ETSY later today...

Bathroom Meets Sidewalk

I was walking to the 7 train this morning and on Clay Street I saw this little set-up in front of someone's building. Things like this increase my want to own a home and property 100%. It looks so cute! It's hard to summon the energy to do things like this when you're a renter. I can't wait to have a yard someday.

Surprise! You're 30!

This weekend Abe and I drove down to Pennsylvania for a surprise 30th birthday party for our friend, Jon. His girlfriend, Katie, did an awesome job at arranging the surprise and Alex and Becca hosted the party at their house. We camped out in their yard just like we did for the 4th of July - except it was much colder. I slept with 2 sweatshirts, a hat, scarf, pj pants, and socks.

The best part of a surprise party is waiting for the surprisee to arrive. Lots of false alarms.

This is how you know it's going to be a good party.

The florist accidentally sent this arrangement to Becca. My favorite part are the champagne grapes. They look like bath beads.

ETSY brain break

I just needed to take a little brain break for a couple minutes and decided to "window shop" at ETSY. I don't have room in my apartment to collect, but I find that just collecting pictures of things at least partially satisfies the urge.

Amazing Baby & Bloc Party

My friend, Matt, plays drums in a hot new band called Amazing Baby. Last night Amazing Baby opened for Bloc Party for a free show at Roseland Ballroom. I love Bloc Party, I love Amazing Baby, and I love free things. Even better? Matt was able to give Margot +2 guests so Piper and I didn't have to wait in line and got to hang in the VIP section with all the elite fans. We even got to hang backstage, but that mostly involved Margot and I stuffing our faces with chips and salsa so we'll just skip over that part.

Piper and I had a marathon day together. She was sent home sick from work so I went to her house for lunch. After work I went over her house to get ready for the concert and then we met Margot on 52nd Street. We decided to first go have a drink at Russian Samovar. I was a little nervous about sipping on vodka, but their fruit infused vodka selection was incredible. Piper chose ginger and Margot and I got apple cinnomon. It was actually really good and easy to drink.

An array of vodka deliciousness.

Getting into Roseland - even with our names on the guest list-was a total crap show. We got frisked and there were lots of older, roadie-type men shouting about forming lines. We eventually made it upstairs to the VIP section and got us some brewskis. Amazing Baby went on at about 8:15 or so. Here is Matt just before he got on stage:

These two got the rock & roll look.

They were awesome! The place was packed - it was kind of insane. I was so happy for Matt and the rest of the band - it was really impressive.

Amazing Baby on stage.

I was really into Bloc Party when they first made it big in like 2005. I even went to a show all by myself and rocked out. I still really like them a lot, and they played a great show, but I think the last show I went to was better. There, I said it. The music sounded great, but they were less animated on stage. Oh well, still awesome!

After the show we went to someone's fancy townhouse for a party. The part of the basement rec room we were was easily twice the size of my apartment. Piper and I didn't stay too long. What can I say? I like my 8 hours of sleep. So sue me.

Congratulations, Matt and everyone in Amazing Baby!!

Pin Cushions

What do I do when I have lots of little pieces of great fabric, a whole jar of vintage buttons, a massive selection of embroidery thread left over from the days of friendship bracelets, and a collection of ribbon?

I make pin cushions! Yay!

These were really easy to make and I'll be posting directions up here in a day or two. If you don't want to go through the bother of making your own, I'm selling them on my SupermarketHQ store for $6 & $4 : click here to view my SupermarketHQ shop.

New York to Chicago to Cleveland to New York!

On Thursday night at 10:30pm Abe and I got into our rented Prius and hit the road. Destination: Chicago, Illinois for the Renegade Craft Fair.

We decided to drive overnight to avoid traffic, which was a pretty good idea, but maybe not the best idea. I drove for the first few hours and then Abe took over. From 2 to 6am we were able to pass the time by calling into our friends' radio show Night People on WFMU. If you click on that link you'll actually be able to list to the show and if you fast forwad to the last 30 minutes you can hear us get punchy and hilarious around 5:45am. It was decided that Abe would be the designated Mantlehand since he was going to be awake for a long time (we were about 400 miles from Chicago at this point), which means he would carry everything covered during the night into the day much like the person carrying the Olympic torch.

Somewhere in Ohio at 8:30am we stopped at a rest area and passed out for an hour. Then we got up and had McDonald's breakfast burritos and drove till we hit Chicago. This is when the rain started, and it didn't stop for 3 days.

We stayed at the Red Roof Inn in Arlington Heights, Illinois (20 miles outside of Chicago). It wasn't the most convenient hotel, but it was the cheapest and it was surprisingly nice. We were situated on a huge strip of fast food restaurants and discount big box stores. It was actually kind of fun but also gross.

Saturday we woke up and it was POURING rain - like out of control. I thought the Renegade Craft Fair would be shut down, but we drove into Wicker Park to check it out. Once we arrived the rain had subsided a little bit and we saw that everyone was setting up and people were out on the streets browsing the booths. Luckily we were able to set up the tent while the rain took a quick break.

Behind the scenes puddle.

Once we were set up the rain started to come back down in buckets - at least it kept us busy - there was always something to protect or dry or go get from the store. Abe is the most wonderful boyfriend in the entire world. He made countless trips to KMart, running through the rain, to pick up plastic sheeting, tarps, and a lantern.

By Saturday afternoon I was able to relax.

Sunday was more of the same! We had broken everything down the night before, which was a pain, but at least we didn't come back to a mess like this:

Abe had to go get the tarp so we could put it over the roof because the canopy was no longer water resistant.

The roof! The roof! The roof is not on fire! ...It's actually soaking wet.

However, by 4:15 pm the rain had stopped and - what's that? Sun? Really? Yes! It was sun!! We took off the tarps, and ever took off the canopy! The fair went until 10pm and the rest of the day was very enjoyable and we were even able to dry out a lot of our stuff before packing up.

Transaction in action.

Crazy times.

Monday morning we hit the road again and made our way back to New York City. When we got to Cleveland, Ohio Abe and I decided to get out of the car for a little while and see Cleveland - why not? We went to some park on Lake Erie. I'm kind of obsessed with the Great Lakes ever since I went to Minnesota.

Me texting the most famous Clevelandite I know, Dave Hill

We were leaving Cleveland and Abe saw the lights on at Jacobs Field because there was an Indians game going on. His goal is to see all the baseball stadiums in the US so I really couldn't deny him the chance the knock another off this list. We were able to get incredible seats for $6 each from some guy on the street. The stadium is fairly new and huge - and clean (I've only been to Fenway Park, Shea Stadium, and Yankee Stadium so this was kind of nuts to me). We stayed for 3 innings and then hit the road again.

Renegade Craft Fair : Chicago!

This week has been nuts-o for me (and Abe) as I am getting ready for the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago!

There is soooooo much to do to prepare the booth. I am also having a major malfunction with my car and need to replace the transmission, so the week has involved dealing with that pain and also finding an affordable rental car. I think I got a good deal on a Prius - which is very exciting. With my calculations what I will save on gas will pay for the rental. ... Let's just hope that all works out. I don't trust rental places until I have returned the car and have not been charged any hidden fees.

Anyway - here's my deal on the craft fair:

Hi there!

Online Browsing Break

I am taking a quick break in my day of screen printing to do some quick online browsing. I "need" a dress for a wedding in November on the West Coast. Is it okay to wear a cream dress if I also wear a sweater/cardigan over it? Is wearing cream a fauz pas and a dis to the bride? I don't really care about wearing white in the winter, that's fine with me. I love a winter white.

Another option I'm considering is this one. Who knows though, Anthropologie is so expensive and usually when I go to the store I'm not that impressed with the quallty even though the catalog makes everything look gorge.

I better get back to work so I can go over to Meredith's house early (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MERE!!), but let me know your thoughts on guests wearing white to a wedding.

Labor Day Weekend 2008

Nothing like a long weekend to make the first week of non-summer seem extra depressing. Oh well, I am happy that this means we have fall weather ahead of us and can wear my new jacket!

Friday afternoon I had lunch with Siobhan and Meredith. Siobhan was in town for a few days from London. It was awesome to see her and drink rosé, but I wish we had more time together.

After lunch with Siobhan I scurried off to the 7 train to meet Abe. We were going to the U.S. Open! This is our second year going and we freaking love it. Who knew we would like watching tennis so much? We saw Andy Roddick play against Ernests Gulbis.

I forgot I got an ice cream cone.

Abe found a ball over by the warm-up courts.

Saturday we drove up to Massachusetts and on the way I took Abe on a quick tour of UConn (my alma mater).

Saturday night we went to the Picadilly Pub on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester. It was surprisingly good. Then we went over Dave & Brit's house and hung out with them and Dennis.

Abe did not like me taking photos during dinner.

Sunday we drove into Boston and met up with Allyson. Allyson is the most wonderful person in the world and got her hands on 3 tickets to a Red Sox game!

This was Abe's first trip to Fenway so it was pretty exciting. It was also really awesome to spend the day with Allyson, who I don't get to see as often as I'd like. The Red Sox lost, but it was a really fun game.
