Ceramics: Fennec Fox

I'm back in the ceramics studio and working on a new mask. This one is of a fennec fox - my animal obsession of 2009. Last year it was the Iberian lynx and my first ceramics project [click to view post]was born. [ed. note: the mask now has a full set of whiskers and Abe is no longer disturbed by them - he actually sets aside the whiskers he finds while sweeping. It's very sweet.]

My fennec fox is moving along now that I'm a more experienced hand-builder. I think I finally have the ears done and can move onto the eyes and mouth. Looking at the photos it doesn't seem too elaborate, but those ears were difficult!

Wedding Present Project

For the past 6 weeks in the ceramics studio I have been working on the wedding present for my cousin and her new husband.

It is a clock - I plan on glazing it white and then using gold leaf enamel to mark the numbers.

It just came out of the bisque fire so I decided to take a few snapshots to mark the progress and also juuuuust in case the glaze totally screws it all up (fingers crossed that will not be the case).

Ceramics: Faux Bois Coasters

These new ceramic faux bois coasters are hot out of the kiln!



Each one has a diameter of about 3.5". They were painted with engobe, carved, fired in the kiln, and then glazed with a clear, matte glaze. The bottoms are covered in felt so that your table or desk top will be extra protected.



Each set is made up of 4 coasters in varying brown hues. All coasters are handmade and therefore is completely unique.

Hot Plate

I took a little break from the land of hobbits and made a a functional piece in ceramics - a trivet. A trivet is used to guard the kitchen counters from a hot pot or pan.

I made this one rather large because we have this giant sauce pan (not pictured) that is so heavy it is difficult to transfer food from the pan to plate when it is being held in my hand.

I am already perfecting my technique and plan on making 2 different sizes and offering them for sale on Etsy.

The trivet is woven from individual pieces of clay and glazed in CV Green.

Ceramics: Precious Baby II

I made a new hobbit in ceramics. This one is a little creepier than the last one, but I like the ring around its eye and the little button.

Magic Enchanted Candle Thing

I just finished my most recent ceramics project. It is one of those things that melts wax tarts. You put a little tea light inside and a scented wax tart up on the top. The tea light melts the tart and your room fills with the scent.

My version is a little hobbit house that belongs in an enchanted forest. I wish I had a little magic mouse to live inside there and keep the tea light fire stoked. I could make a little matchbook bed for him and he could sit on a thimble while eating a cheese sandwich off his thread spool table.

My hobbit house features moss, tiny blue flowers, three magic mushrooms and a little window.

Ceramics: King of the Forest

I finished my lynx mask back in December, but I just finally got around to hanging it on the wall and taking photos of the finished product. He is on our living room wall looking over his domain. Click here and here to see his earlier stages.

Abe is slightly disturbed that I have been collecting the whiskers our cat, Paws, sheds and sticking them in the lynx mask, but I am an artist! (I need to think of a good artist b.s. line about mixing reality with inanimate objects.)

The fact is that I just think it's kind of awesome- and I'm a crazy cat lady and there's nothing I can do to control myself.
