Weekend in The Berkshires

Went up to The Berkshires for the weekend and partook in a lot of outdoor activities and good times with Abe and some old friends and their families.

Traffic was a monster on Friday and 5 hours after leaving Brooklyn we were rewarded for the pain with this crazy lighting and view.

Saturday we hiked up Monument Mountain.

There were baby birds at the house - they flew the coop Sunday morning. They grow up so fast.

On Sunday we walked to the Norman Rockwell Museum. It was really awesome. My favorite part was visiting his studio - I wish I could steal his studio and move into it.

On our way back to NYC on Sunday I saw a sign for a labyrinth and swerved into a church parking lot ... not exactly my dream labyrinth, but was still pleasant and possibly a spiritual experience.

I promised Abe ice cream and had the Red Rooster as my goal - saw it on our way up and desperately wanted to go there. I am a sucker for old fashioned things.

Got back to Brooklyn and noticed that the former home of Manhattan Avenue's Subway is now Subs UR Way. Mmmm "Eat Fresher."?

Charlotte

Yesterday morning I opened up the window and leaned out to water the plants. Luckily I caught myself before I accidentally tore down Charlotte's web!

I let her keep it up for the day - I have to say, I love the idea - it's like having an extra screen on the window, but she's totally blocking me from accessing the tomato plants and catnip.

I moved her last night and felt a little sad when she slipped from my spoon out of my line of vision...but this morning guess who was back?!

I moved her again, hopefully she'll just scoot over a little bit out of the way of the window.

Fire Escape Garden Summer '09

I've let my radishes run wild and the flowers they grow are so pretty and dainty.

Mmmm - cilantro. A polarizing herb - people either love it or want it dead. I love it in fresh salsa. Hopefully my tomato plants will be bountiful and I can stuff myself with salsa all summer long.

Garden Season

Saturday was fun. In the morning I went to Lowe's with Chelsea to get some gardening supplies. We made a pit stop at McDonald's on our way home and I had a McFlurry lunch.

Back at the apartment, I got to cleaning up the backyard. After I had cleaned all the trash out, raked the ground, did some planting of brussel sprouts, propagated the Tiger Lilly, and completed a new grill station layout, I thought it looked pretty awesome back there. But now, when I look at the photos I realize there is still so much to be done. The problem is that I rent and plan on moving next winter, so I don't really want to spend money on someone else's property behind a Chinese restaurant. But to give you an idea, I've posted some before photos (circa 2 years ago) for reference.

I planted a ton of brussel sprouts, moved the strawberries into containers, tried to cover a lot of the shadier areas with mint, lavender and wild flower seeds.

After a day of yard work I took the G train to Brooke and Miles' apartment for the first BBQ of the year and it was damn good.

The Kitten Crisis

So I have a yard/lot behind my building, which is adjacent to several other backyards. I also live above a Chinese restaurant that has access to the yard. We have a lot of feral cats that hang out back there - it's a pretty sweet layout for a stray cat.

If you click & enlarge this photo you can see 2 of the kittens snacking.

In the spring/summer one or two cats usually have a litter of kittens and we'll have a little kitten playground out there. I kind of let them be because it's summer and they seem to do fine on their own.

However, this year a cat had a litter late in the year - sometime in August. Now it's October and the kittens are still small and will be as winter hits. There was one kitten that I named Harry - he was sickly, but so freaking cute and would let me pick him up. I tried to monitor him, fed him, gave him a little attention. Finally I found a place that would take him away to be fixed up by a vet and put up for adoption. Unfortunately, I went away for a few days and when I came back he was missing. I cried for two days - I wish I had found Neighborhoodcats.org a few days earlier.

Harry's twin brother.

I hope Harry turns up again this week, but in the meantime there are 4 other kittens back there that I need to help. Neighborhoodcats.org is supposed to come by sometime this week to set up humane traps. The kittens are so cute I'm sure they will be adopted right away and we will also try to catch the adults so they can be neutered and then released back into the yard.

Bands, Gardens, Dorms & Fried Chicken

This weekend was action packed.

On Friday I went to a CMJ show at Mecury Lounge to see the band The Delta Spirit. Colleen recently got into them and she got a few of us together to go to the show. It was really, really fun - I think I have a new favorite band.

After the show Colleen, Abe, Katie, Greg and I went back to Greenpoint to the bar Matchless and Starr met up with us. When Abe and I left the bar we went over to Palace Fried Chicken and got chicken and French fries. It's pretty disgusting there, but sometimes it just hits the spot.

Saturday my aunt, uncle and cousin came into town to see my other cousin, Eddie (he lives down the street from me). They picked me up and we all went to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. It was supposed to be a stormy day, but the rain held up and we had a great time enjoying the fall weather.

Saturday night was a big one - Piper's 30th birthday!! She held the party at her apartment in the city and the theme was "College Dorm". Kind of a vague theme, but once you saw the decorations and got everyone in costume the whole look really came together.

Bathroom Meets Sidewalk

I was walking to the 7 train this morning and on Clay Street I saw this little set-up in front of someone's building. Things like this increase my want to own a home and property 100%. It looks so cute! It's hard to summon the energy to do things like this when you're a renter. I can't wait to have a yard someday.

Minnesota :: Friday

Friday I dropped Jaime off at work and went back to Como Park, but this time I went to the Conservatory and to the Zoo. Both are free to enter, which is amazing and a big change from NYC.

The Conservatory is kind of like the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. I loved walking around.

The Zoo was sad. I hate zoos and I should have listened to my gut and not gone in there. I do not believe in capturing wild animals to cage them up in unnatural settings in order for people to go and gawk at them. It makes me really sad - even "good" zoos (nature reserves and animal rehabilitation centers are fine though). The Como Zoo was fine, but there is definitely not enough space to keep gorillas, giraffes, zebras, lions, tigers.... seeing a giant male gorilla spacing out on the cement floor of a glassed in cage breaks my heart. It has nothing to do with whether or not the people running the zoo love the animals/take good care of them - it's just not fair to lock wild animals up like that.

Anyway, the Conservatory was great.

Nice use of succulents:

For the evening I decided we were going to go to Nye's Polonaise per the request of my friend, Colleen, who made me promise we would go. The front room is a slightly dive-y, but awesome, bar. It is here where you can dance to the music of The World's Most Dangerous Polka Band. No joke. They might be old, but they will play the hokey poky for all the youngsters.

When Jaime's friend/internmate, Lindsay, showed up we went into the formal dining room. This is where the late-night magic happens. It is very 70's and reminded me of the restaurant in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The food is Polish - and not like the Polish food I get in Greenpoint. This is very heavy on the gravy. We ate like our lives depended on it.

There is also karaoke. An old lady plays the piano a la Billy Joel and sings along to every song. There is no television - instead you read the lyrics from a sheet of paper while sitting at the piano bar. It's pretty freaking great. We were too busy eating massive amounts of gravy to make it up to the bar. There is also a man (not shown) in the corner that I am positive must sit there every single night - he looks very pissed off most of the time, but he will mouth the words to every single song. The only performance we saw him applaud was of 2 girls singing "I Will Survive". Go fig.

This was a very enjoyable night and I demand that anyone visiting Minneapolis must go to Nye's Polonaise. Just don't order the spinach dip - my sister and I will eat just about anything - especially dips - and this thing was sick.

More Minnesota

I was going to post photos and captions for Saturday and Sunday in Minnesota, but I got lazy. So here are just some photos. Let me just emphasize that Lake Superior is freaking awesome and we spent 80% of our two days up there in the freezing cold water. I also did some major rock collecting.

At Tom's Logging Camp.

My fave wild flowers.
